Morocco 2023-2024 Day 11 (12/29/2023) - Marrakech
We started off our day in Marrakech with a visit to the Saadian Tombs. They date to the time of the Saadian dynasty and in particular to the reign of Ahmad al-Mansur (1578–1603), though members of Morocco's monarchy continued to be buried here for a time afterwards. The complex is regarded by many art historians as the high point of Moroccan architecture in the Saadian period due to its luxurious decoration and careful interior design.
The architetcture and adecoration of these tombs is incredible.
Marrakech was one of the areas hit by the recent Earthquake, so there were a lot of areas that had shoring and reinforcement.
A stroll through the Market square
This is a fruit juice stand, you pick it and they squeeze the juice in front of you, now that's fresh.
Restaurant had seat on four different floors, so we headed to the top for the view.
Overlooking the market square
Zak decided we should take a horse drawn carriage ride through the streets of Marrakech
Zak, Sarah and Sami rode in another carriage so they could take pictures of us.
We stopped at a park with a really long walkway, about three quarters of a mile.
At the end of the walk was the Menara Gardens and a huge manmade lake. The gardens and lake date back to 1157 AD. This is where they would train their army to swin so that when they crossed the Mediterranean to Spain, they could swim in case a boat capsized.
Back at the market square the snake charmers were out with their Cobras.
There are guys that want you to pay them to get your picture taken with the monkeys
The little guy on my arm really liked me, and just cuddled into my shoulder. He did not want to go back to his owner and snapped at him when the owner tried to take him away.
Fresh squeezed Pomogranate Juice
Street performers doing acrobatics and showing off for us
As the evening comes, many of the vendors that were there during the days are gone and many food vendors come out
The evening vendors set up portable restaurants.
