3-4-2022 The Island of Dominica

The island of Dominica (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic). The island changed hands several times during the 7 Years war between the British and the French. This island had some of the strictest Covid protocols of any place we visited.  When Covid first hit they had a few cases that were intercepted at the airport and did not spread throughout the island.  It was not until 5 months ago when some people illegally entered the island by boat from the neighboring island of Guadeloupe that they had an outbreak.  According to our guide they have only had 11 deaths.  The city looks old, but if someone buys a home they have to maintain the original architectural style and materials.  The people were lovely and they still have respect and manners.  Very refreshing.

Welcome to Dominica

Very narrow streets

Caterpillar of the Giant Hawk Moth

Inside "The Bamboo House" traditionally where couples come for their first Kiss. Especially the "Convent Girls" as the Girls Convent School is right across the street.

In 1975 A category 5 Hurricane blew over a Baobab Tree where they had just
parked a brand new school Bus. The bus had never been used.

When the Baobab tree fell it continued to grow straight again as well as crushing the bus.

Common to see Banyan trees here

Overlooking the City and Our Cruise Ship

Panorama overlooking the City of Roseau

Beautiful Coastline

Few photos driving past the local farmers market

We visited a facility where all the workers are handicapped. The gray haired lady on the right was weaving a basket and is completely blind.

The water here is crystal clear
