Venetian Islands, Murano & Burano
Day 14 – Venice (Marghera), Italy Sunday, November 16
Since 2021 cruise ships are no longer allowed to go in the Giudecca Canal, and to the criuse terminal because damage they were causing and a collision with a smaller docked boat sealed the decision. They now dock at commercial ports and have transportation to the city by bus and water bus.
Our tour Exploring the Charming Venetian Islands, Murano & Burano
We traveled by boat to two of Venice’s most beautiful outlying islands, Murano where all the famous glass blowing in Venice was moved to in the 1200's to prevent fires in the main part of Venice, and Burano a fishing village famous for the lace made by the wives of the fishermen.
Leisurely cruising along the Giudecca Canal, passing St. Mark’s Square and the Doge’s Palace.
The upper enclosed bridge is "The Bridge of Sighs" where prisoners would cross from the court room to the prison awaiting execution. The bridge was given its name by the English writer Lord Byron.
On one of the outlyinds on the way to Murano, was a modern art creation by Lorenzo Quinn, sone of the actor Anthony Quinn. He specializes in large sculptures and loves hands.
Docking at the island of Murano, nicknamed “Island of the Flames”; all of Venice’s glassmaking was moved here in 1291 to reduce the risk of fires in the city. We visited one of the leading glass manufacturers to witness a master craftsman at work
This Master Glass blower has been working here for over 50 years.
Exquisite pieces
On Burano, a charming island lined with brightly colored houses, we learned about Venice’s lace-making industry then had stroll along quaint cobblestone streets in the rain.
Of course a day in Italy is not complete without a stop for Gelato
This shop had the BEST Gelato we have ever eaten.
Back on the ship we had to say goodbye to our dinner gang, as they were leaving from Venice in the morning. We will miss them.

Venezia, Murano, and Burano -- 3 of my favorites in Italy. Did you have time for a gondola ride? Mmmmmm....gelato!! It's the BEST! (Cecile, you look like a mischievous, but happy little kid holding that ice cream!!) Ok....I want to know which glasses you bought in Murano...the blue ones you took a photo of? I know Cecile has a passion for glassware and you really can't do much better than the beauties they've made on Murano. Happy travels, mi paisano!! :-)
