 Day 10 – Corfu (Kérkyra), Greece  Wednesday, November 12

Panoramic Corfu & Old Town Walking Tour


Woke up this morning to find a big NCL cruise ship on the other side if the dock from us.

Just outside the harbor was a beautiful little uninhabited island


We started our bus tour with a drive to Kanoni, a wonderful vantage point for photos of tiny Pontikonisi Island, or Mouse Island, and the Vlacherna Monastery.

The Old Fortress and the Georgian Mon Repos Villa, once a residence of the Greek Royal Family and the birthplace of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (Queen Elizabeth's Husband). 


Walking the quaint streets of the old town with sidewalk cafes and restaurants and a wide vatiety of stores.

After the NCL cruise ship left we could see across the water to what we thought was another part of the island,  Our Guide told us that the mountains are in Albania and the town is Sagiada, Albania, just an hour away by ferry.


This evening they held a reception for the passengers taking the full length of the cruise (Some left in Athens, others will leave in Venice and the third group in Rome).  100 of the 900 Passengers on board are taking the full cruise.  Here is the Captain with Cecile.



The reception was held at the back of the ship where we could view the sunset as we cruiused away from Corfu.

Kutna Hora and Sedlec (a small suburb of Kutna Hora) is a unique site about an hour outside of Prague. In the middle ages it was a site of pilgrimage. Legend has it that the Abbot at the time Abbbot Heidenreich had travelled to Jerusalem and brought back a fistful of soil from Akeldama (Field of Blood) establishing the first holy field in Central Europe.  After a monk at the monestary here discovered silver in the second half of the 13th century, the population grew to about 80,000 making it one of the largest cities in the world at the time. With the black plague, mining accidents, etc. the cemetary grew to an unmanagable size of 3.5 Hectares (almost 9 Acres). At the time the solution was to build an Ossuary (a repository for the bones).  Since tradition mandates that remains must be buried below ground the Church od All Saints was built with the bones carefully stored in the basement "Below Ground". The Trip Starts - Viking Ocean Cruises - Iconic Mediterranean Shores

  Viking Ocean Cruises - Iconic Mediterranean Shores on the  Viking Vesta - Istanbul, Turkey to Barcelona, Spain Started with a long trip from home to Istanbul. Flights from Knoxville to Charlotte, North Carolina, Charlotte to London, England and London to Istanbul.  Flight Time 12 1/2 Hours plus another 9-10 hours in Airports. Finally got to the ship at about 9 PM the next day (local time).

Oahu Day 2

 Started the day at the "Punchbowl" (The National Cemetery of the Pacific). This used to be one of the highlights of a visit to Hawaii, but sadly now it rarely gets mentioned in the travel websites.  For people who respect and revere the military it is as moving as going to Arlington National Cemetery.  The Punchbowl gets its name because of the location in a volcanic crater above the city of Honolulu. One of the impressive things about the Memorial is that they have huge panels telling about the major campaigns of the Second World War in the Pacific and the Korean War.
