Day 16 – Venice (Fusina), Italy Tuesday, November 18
Tour - At a Glance: St. Mark’s Square
From the pier next to the ship, we had a leisurely cruise across the lagoon from Fusina to the main islands of Venice. There we passed magnificent waterside palazzos and piazzas and peering down the lapping, narrow
canals that weave their way into the city’s medieval alleyways. We disembarked at the landing
next to Palazzo Cornoldi,

We passed the Basilica del Santissimo Redentore built as a votive church
after the plague of 1575-77 that took 46,000 lives.

San Giorgio Maggiore Church (Church of St George)

We then set off on foot with our
guide toward St. Mark’s Square, crossing the four elegant bridges
that link the waterfront. As you cross the bridges you can look down the canals some of which have gondolas tied up along them.
Hotels are already decorating for Christmas.
Best seat in the hotel's restaurant
Classic masks used for Venetian parties. The Red hat in the middle was the hat of the Doge who was the head of the Venetian empire, they did not have a king or emporer.
Originally the masks were all plain white masks.
As the tide was coming in the water was bubbling up through the drains
The splendid Gothic-Byzantine St. Mark’s Basilica and its grand
Campanile bell tower
In 2005 when we were here before with Frank George, we took a gondola ride from this spot. It has not changed much since then, the picture below is the same location in 2005
There was one change at this location, to the left is now a Hard Rock Cafe.
It was a cold morning, so we stopped in to warm up and have a little something
The way to have coffee, an Espresso Matrini
and a Cappucino
A refreshing Mango Strawberry Lemonade
Statue with the winged lion the official symbol of Venice
Stopped for a picture by the Bridge of Sighs
As we sailed bact there was a great view of the Doge's palace and the
bell tower at St. Mark's
The Basilica Santa Maria della Salute
Back across the lagoon we had a great view of our Ship docked at Fusina
Oooooo....an espresso martini!! Leave it to you to find one, Cecile!! I see you also enjoyed a Cappuccino..... It's a tough life, but somebody's got to enjoy Venetia!! Incredible how things stay the SAME even though so much time has passed....I guess all they can do is slap a new coat of paint over what's been there for several centuries. That's amazing that you still have the previous photo on your camera and were able to stand at the same spot! Venice is such a beautiful place. (PS. This is the first shot of your ship...it's HUGE!!)
