Krka National Park

Day 13 – Split, Croatia    Saturday, November 15

Krka National Park and the Magnificent Skradinski Buk Waterfalls

We arrived this morning to the busy port of Split, Croatia.  Split is the major starting port for ferries to many of the 1200 islands along the coast of Croatia.

On our way to the Krka National Park we passed a fortress atop a hill that dates back to the Roman Era.

As we climbed the mountain, we could see back to Split.

Entering the valley where the National Park is located, we could see a lot of water, this is fed by natural springs, so there is water here year round. This park covers almost 27,000 acres, and its highlights are the magnificent waterfalls and crystal clear pools that tumble through the wilderness.

Skradinski Buk falls consists of  17 cataracts—stretching 1,312 feet along the river and falling some 150 feet from their highest to their lowest point—are considered among the most beautiful calcium-carbonate tiered pools in Europe. At their widest spot, they span 328 feet across the river.

Various mills were  along the path of the river and powered by it's water.

The most spectacular part of the falls is the lower falls, pictures just can't do it justice.

The path around the falls area of the park is 2 Kilometers (about 1 1/4 Miles). The path goes downhill then numerous sets of steps until just before this falls where there is 100 steps down to this level. Of course that means you have to go back up 180 steps then a slope and a few more sets of steps.

  2. So happy to see that you're taking more photos with the 2 of you IN them!! (Does that mean you've seen my posts??) The falls look lovely and in a way, remind me of a few of the waterways in Scotland near the distilleries. Looks like it's getting a little chilly -- you both have jackets &/or puff vests on. I hope you're having a wonderful time on this trip. You've seen such beautiful & historical things....what's not to like??!!! Lots of love, Debbie
