Bari, Italy

Day 18 – Bari, Italy Thursday, November 20

Tour - Bari Walking Tour

Our initial thoughts as we started our bus tour through the city was that it was just a modern metropolitan city.  Many shopping areas with designer brands.

The Theater

Niccolò Piccinni was an Italian composer of symphonies, sacred music, chamber music, and opera.

When we started the walking part of the tour and entered the old city through the city walls we could see the old city was a big change from the city outside the walls. . inside the most beloved of Bari’s churches, the Basilica of St. Nicholas. Also known as Santa Claus, St. Nicholas is the city’s patron. When his remains were brought to Bari in 1087, they inspired an influx of pilgrims that infused the city with wealth.

A Simple entrance for the Basilica

Statue of St. Nicholas in the Church Courtyard

According to our tour guide the inscription next to the entrance states that withih this building resides the remains of St. Nicholas

Mail Alter

In a side room near the entrance is a Silver tribute to St Nicholas

Side alter with Crucifix

Elaborately decorated ceilings

According to our guide the interior was once covered with frescos, but there are only a few left after restoraation on the church.

Downstairs from the main church is an Greek Orthodox church in the same building

The pillar of Miracles

The tomb of St. Nicolas resides under the alter of the Orthodox Church

The room is supported by Pillars from all over the known world when the church was erected.

Homes of a group of people dedicated to maintainence of St. Nicolas Basilica.

We finished off our tour by sampling traditional orecchiette, an ear-shaped pasta, accompanied by cacioricotta cheese and tomatoes, Then returned to your ship.

  1. Isn't it amazing how incredibly beautiful the INSIDE of the churches and basilicas are?!! I didn't know that a Greek Orthodox Church could be built in the same place as a Catholic Church....very unique! Keep the photos coming......
