4/6/2024 Regensburg, Germany
Another clear sunny day in the high seventies.
The buses dropped us foo just across the river from Regensburg in the town of Stadamhof. then we had to cross a bridge to get into town. As you can see from the picture a number of buses from several ships all arrived about the same time.
The bridge we are crossing actually dates back to te romans although it has been resurfaced removing the cobble stones and replacing it with granite squares for a smoother surface, and new side walls, the base of the bridge and pylons date back to the Romans.
This was an important stop on the route of teh Salt Trade. Up river from here was Salzburg where the salt was mined. People were paid in salt as in the period of the city's prime salt was as valuable as gold. people were paid in salt, which is where the term Salary comes from.
This shows the bridge built by the Romans, still functional to this day.
First "Fast Food", this building (although it was moved (about 60 ft) and rebuilt, has been serving Bratwurst on bread rolls since the 1100's making it probably the oldest fast food restaurant.
The Goliath House
Colorful homes
Tower of the Rathaus (Town Hall). The square in front of the town hall was really busy. Being Saturday there were many weddings going on. In Germany Church Weddings are for ceremony, but you are not oficially married until you go to the Justice of the Peach at the town hall. There were about eight groups waiting and they do it like a production line, NEXT! I did not take pictures there because Germans take offense to foreigners taking pictures of wedding parties.
Many ornate baroque style homes here.
St. Peter's Cathedral
The original alter which was wood , was destroyed, but was replaced by this Silver and Gold one.
