Relaxing Day Around Hilo

 

Spent the day around town today, started with a short drive up to Rainbow Falls.




Waterflow is down as this is the Dry Season

After a walk around the shops downtown, we made a stop at the Puna Chocolate Company
to try out some locally grown and produced Chocolate.

In the park in the center of Hilo is a Statue of Kamehameha The Great

In the afternoon we decided to take a walk from the hotel down Banyan Drive
(appropriately Named). The hotel is on Banyan Drive


The Banyan Trees line both sides of the drive



At the other end of the drive from our hotel is the LiliÊ»uokalani Gardens

2-24-2022 First Full Day in San Juan

After Breakfast and another Covid test we took a walk to the old town of  San Juan.  It is a beautiful old town but with very narrow streets, so all the traffic is one way.  Stopped for a refreshing drink at the waterfront, then a Taxi back to the hotel (more walking than we normally do in 3-4 days). Beautiful Coastline Capital Building Castillo San Cristobal Old San Juan Reminds me of New Orleans, you can really see the French influence on the architecture   Statue of Cristobal Colon (Christopher Columbus) For Brian's Benefit Cocktails at La Casita San Juan and Boarding the Viking Sea

4/1/2024 (Morning) Ehrenbreitstien Fortress

  Another morning of liquid sunshine.  We are headed across the river this morning to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.  Fortresses and castles have been built and destroyed on this strategic loaction since 4000 BC. The current fortress has actually never seen a major battle since it was built in the 1800's. The fortress is at the confluence of the Rhine and Main Rivers. Looking across the River from where we were docked Ehrenbreitstien sits atop the ridge. As we were leaving the ship, there was a statue of Wilhelm I the first Emporer and king of Prussia The tour guides are dressed in period costume to play  the part of a British Engineering officer who had been assigned to learn about the fortification of Ehrenbreitstien in the eraly 1800's The only approach to the fortress was across a batttlefield where cannons capable of firing 1000 meters were aimed.
